Like, Love, Lost, Labs: what our participants told us

After each in-person workshop, participants filled in a four-part form. The Like and Love columns are on our Wall of Love. This post is about the other two.

At the end of our in-person Quran RJ & Doodling workshops in 2017 and 2018, we asked the adults who came to fill in a short feedback form. It has four columns, each with a picture of a tree in a different season:

  • Like: what they liked about the session.
  • Love: their aha moment, the thing they would want us to repeat.
  • Lost: where they could not catch up or did not understand.
  • Labs: what they would like us to try next.

Most of the forms were printed in black and white, with a feedback icon at the top and a box at the bottom for anything else. Some people used that box for their name, a thank you or a du'a for us.

The Like and Love columns told us what to keep. Participants wrote about relating each surah to real-life experience, giving examples for each of the 4-I, the doodling, and the approachable instructors. One liked that "children are allowed to roam around freely". You can read many of these on our Wall of Love.

The Lost and Labs columns are where participants told us what to work on. Here is what they wrote, word for word.

Lost

One participant wrote: "Longer time to reflect & practise will be good."

Another wrote: "Still need to figure out my creativity in drawing." A third wrote: "At first - keeping up alhamdulillah".

Others left it empty or wrote "NIL", and one wrote "Alhamdulillah none."

Labs

The Labs column gave us ideas. One participant asked us to share our workshops more widely: "perhaps can post more workshops on FB. Because sometimes don't really know about it." Another asked: "perhaps can do a session for Father?"

And one simply wrote: "keep it up!"

What we changed

People really liked this format and were happy to fill it in. Like and Love showed us what to keep and what to improve. Labs is where new things came from: ideas we then created, tried out and kept changing. From the Labs answers we grew more programmes, and more kinds of programmes.

If you run a class, a form like this is easy to copy: four columns and a few lines in each.
